Located a few blocks from
Main Street, the Quilt Cottage was built in stages from the late 1880s through
late 1940s. Its wide front porch provides for many quiet moments to watch
life on tree-lined North Church Avenue. North Church is an exceptionally
wide street, because a trolley line once ran down the center of the
avenue. This area is the heart of Bozeman’s northeast corner, a
neighborhood built by the working class employees of the nearby brewery and
railroad line in the early 1900s.
Architecturally
the cottage is defined as vernacular, which roughly means the builders
used whatever new or recycled design elements and building materials they could
obtain. Apparently, the large windows in the house were salvaged from a
much larger building and therefore had to be set sideways. So rather than
open up-down, most slide sideways. In keeping with the philosophy and
needs of previous owners, when the porch was recently added, the wood for the
balusters was salvaged from shipping pallets. The end result is a house
best described as a classic example of early 20th
century American, which provides a relaxing atmosphere for a wonderful
stay.
The
cottage was named for its many quilts made by Kathy Tamosaitis. Some are
flannel for comfy relaxing on the couch on a cold night. Some were made
by completing quilting projects left undone by others from the early and mid 20th
century.
The
cottage is decorated with various oak antiques, many of which collected since
the 1970s on the east coast from New York to North Carolina.
Many collected items accent the house, such as the stone arrowhead collection
over the TV. The various wood carvings are handmade, mostly during
the 1980s and 90s. The oak mantle came out of a house in Maryland, while
the white clock shelf over the TV came out of a house in New Britain,
Connecticut.

What a perfect getaway to work on a quilt project! The front bedroom converts into a sewing room with a cabinet that contains a Bernina 1630, along with all the required gadgets like ¼” foot, rotary cutter and rulers, an ironing board and iron, and some inspirational books. One whole wall is available for a design wall. There is even an OTT® Light to help you chose just the right fabric combination, and to better see what you are doing.
Feel free to take the sewing machine to classes at any of the local quilt stores.

This chair in the living room is a nice place to sit and hand quilt, piece, etc.
Things
within Walking Distance in Bozeman
One of the many pleasantries of being located in the northeast corner, just blocks off of Main Street, is the easy walking access to great places.
- The Mezzo Matto Bakery at the corner of Wallace and Peach (3 blocks away). This outstanding bakery is owned and operated by folks displaced from New Orleans due to hurricane Katrina, Lucky for us, they chose to stay in Bozeman. Walk over for coffee and a pastry.
- The BoZone Tasting Room on Broadway Ave. Great for joining the after work crowd.
- Montana Ales Works at the corner of Wallace and Main. This microbrewery offers both food and beverages.
- The Bozeman Public Library on Main, just across the street from the MT Ales Works.
- Heebs Grocery at the corner of Wallace and Main for shopping needs.
- The Gas Station Restaurant (excellent soups), and the Western Grill Restaurant (outstanding homemade cinnamon buns), both at the corner of Main and Church.
- Sunday night ‘jam session’ of Irish musicians at the ‘317’ bar at the corner of N. Rouse and Main. The 317 shares the 1st floor of the Bozeman Hotel with a pizzareria, small Mexican restaurant, and other bar.
- Shopping downtown (including a wonderful Quilt Store: ‘Main Street Stitches’)
- Also worth mentioning for summer guests is the community pool at Bogert Park on South Church.
There are great quilt stores in the area. Here are some of my favorites, but there are a lot more in the surrounding area.

The Famous Quilt store run by Jane Quinn “Quilting
in the Country”. This is a fabulous
quilt store that can’t be missed |

The quilt store that is within walking distance from
the Quilt Cottage where you will be staying.
They really specialize in batiks, as well as ‘Western theme’
fabric. They also do a great job with
fat packs. |

Reproduction Fabrics is a big mail-order store, but
imagine the thrill of being able to walk into their store and actually see
(and feel) the fabric before you buy.
This store is maybe a half hour walk from the house, or drive so you
don’t have to carry all your purchases back home! |

If you feel like going for a long drive (about 2
hours - to see some beautiful Montana scenery – the ‘Bear Tooth Mountains’),
I recommend a store in Washoe MT |

“I suddenly felt the urge to bake bread, and wondered if the kitchen had the equipment I needed. I soon discovered this kitchen is better equipped than my kitchen at home! What a wonderful vacation”
“We really enjoyed the house – especially the porch. We spent a lot of time sitting on the porch with friends”
